do you believe in werewolves?

do you believe in werewolves?

2 min read 📚

I was with someone recently that asked me, “Do you believe in werewolves?”

I tilted my head to the side and said, “Huh?”

“Werewolves, do you believe in werewolves?!” They said incredulously.

“Umm, no I don’t believe in werewolves.”

Here’s the phrase that really got me.

“But don’t you believe in spiritual stuff, like God and angels?”

That conversation has sort of stuck with me.

See, I am someone who is OK with and has really understood the fight of doubt and unbelief and questions. As a religion & philosophy major at a pretty liberal school, I was constantly bombarded with reasons for doubt. I actually grew pretty fond of it. I became OK with it.

But what this conversation has reminded me of is how easy we as humans believe in a lot of things

Ghosts

Conspiracies

Ancient Myths

Witches

Sasquatch

Lochness

We have TV shows based on this stuff. We have huge swatches of society that are OK with believing in things with almost no evidence. They just sort of believe it, feel it even.

And it isn’t a dumb/smart thing. It isn’t like dumb people believe in things without evidence and smart people are the ones that believe in all those real evidence based things. This is just a human nature thing.

We believe in things. For one reason in another we believe in things that we can’t prove all the time. We have talk shows about them. We argue on national television over things like this all the time. I believe in this thing, you believe in this thing, now let’s argue about it.

Yet, so often we have this problem when it comes to Jesus.

Are you sure Jesus is who he says he is?

I don’t think Jesus really died because there is no way he came back from the dead.

Jesus was a good person, but not perfect. I can’t believe that.

Yet, we believe in all sorts of crazy unfounded things. Why do we as humans fight so hard about believing in someone vs something.

See, believing in Jesus affects your life.

If Jesus is who he says he is, than all of a sudden you life has this huge, massive bomb dropped on it. You have to deal with him and all the things he says.

But believing in Sasquatch or vampires, yeah, that’s easy. That is fun. That won’t cost you anything.

Here’s the point: People don’t find it hard to believe in Jesus because they don’t just see the evidence, or they just can’t get on board with the truth of him. No, the real issue is, they don’t want him to be true. They don’t want to deal with that. They’d rather believe in something that doesn’t affect them.
